The study of project management has allowed me to communicate effectively and lead courageously when things do not go as planned. I have also been able to manage change more effectively whilst managing a team. I strongly believe that managing a project allows one to be an strong coach and leader. My education has allowed me to practices key concepts of Project Management in real-life scenarios in the workplace and personal life. Whether evaluating possible risks or contingencies or simply communicating to client and/or contractors, communication is a vital component for a successful Project Manager.
Conflict Resolution
Resolving conflict is an essential attribute for all Project Managers. Although conflict comes with a negative connotation, one must remember conflict can be healthy, as well. What I have learned through my learnings, what is important, is how I choose to react and respond that can either make or break the issue on hand. My key takeaways based on the experiences provided in my Organizational Leadership "journey" were to make sure all parties felt heard and included(including oneself) and to follow-up to check for understanding and clarity. I think it is healthy to have honest and transparent communication because it allows vulnerability and genuine authenticity in all discussions.
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking has allowed me to be much more mindful with solving problems at the moment. More importantly, it allows to to challenge the status quo of the project or task on hand. Often times, also one becomes accustomed to performing as expected or how what one is used to when, ideally, one should act accordingly at the moment. One key takeaway for myself and my own experience is that every day is going to be different and what may have worked great yesterday, may not translate the same today.
Decision Making
Decision making plays a vital role in my journey in Organizational Leadership. Before, I feel that I was often hesitant or lacked the confidence to make a sound and healthy decision at the moment because I was to preoccupied with what may happen. Honing my skills and acknowledging my opportunities in decision making throughout my learning has allowed me to show up as a better leader and take ownership of any decision whether the result(s) turned out the way I wanted them to be or not.
Empathy
I personally feel that empathy is my strongest skill and component as a leader. Prior of my educational learnings, I strongly felt confident of this attribute and, now, even more so. It is very important to understand what is at stake and how is my impact others around, negatively and positively. I am a firm believer of words have value and making sure my audience feels heard and supported is crucial.
Social and Cross-Cultural Skills
This subject is also a skill I firmly believe I add value to in any scenario. I think it is very important to be aware and mindful of the people and communities involved in all projects. How I communicate and show up is very important. I have learned to give myself ample time to do my research of who is all impacted and how it may affect others. By doing so, it has allowed me to approach any meeting with the most respect and assurance that my message is precise and others feel heard.
Team Dynamics and Collaboration
What I have learned though my teachings of team dynamics and collaboration is that we all win together and effective communication plays an important role. I believe that how we choose to show up and hold ourselves accountable with commitments is crucial for a positive outcome. What I have also learned is that role clarity and checking for understand(or following up) can immediately increase team productivity and engagement.
